Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin opined on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Buterin, the measure was a “crime” against the people of Ukraine and Russia.
Buterin’s remarks follow a “special military operation” announced by Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin. However, this operation is now seen as a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Buterin criticizes Russian invasion of Ukraine
Buterin was born in Russia, but that hasn’t stopped the 28-year-old from criticizing his native country’s act against Ukraine. According to the programmer, this measure would have great consequences for the Ukrainian and Russian people.
“I know there will be no safety”, Buterin he said, adding that he does not see any possibility of the conflict being resolved diplomatically. In making these remarks, Buterin is going against the position of his motherland, Russia. He even ended his tweet with the phrase “Glory to Ukraine”.
However, Buterin emphasized that his personal opinion is not that of Ethereum, saying, “Ethereum is neutral, but I am not.”
Rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in a major disruption in the cryptocurrency industry and the global financial market. On Thursday, Bitcoin dropped below $35,000, making it the lowest level since June 2021. Most other cryptocurrencies are also trading in the red zone.
The cryptocurrency’s market capitalization dropped to less than $1.6 trillion after that drop, showing that around $200 billion has been liquidated since then.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has heightened tensions around the world, and the West has responded with tough sanctions against Russia. US President Joe Biden said the attacks were “unprovoked and unwarranted”.
The UK Prime Minister has also imposed sanctions on Russia, as has the European Commission. The sanctions are already affecting the Russian financial sector. The Russian ruble is trading at an all-time low against the US dollar. The Russian stock market is also trading at considerably low prices.
